(PO146) Evaluation of the Physico-Chemical Properties of ZenSealTM

Abstract: ZenSeal™ is a recently released tricalcium oxide silicate-based sealer, which according to the manufacturers, has high flowability and predictable seal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physico-chemical properties of this sealer and compare it to EndoSequence BC Sealer and AH Plus JET. Physico-chemical properties were tested following ISO 6876 recommendations. Radiopacity was analyzed with digital radiographs, and flow was tested at room temperature. Fresh sealers were immersed in distilled water, and pH was measured after 3, 24, and 48 hours. Data was analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison test with a significance level of 5%. The radiopacity of ZenSeal was 8.38±0.26 mm of Al, which was significantly lower than AH Plus (16.47±1.01 mm of Al) (p=.01), but there was no difference when compared to BC Sealer (8.19±0.13 mm of Al). AH Plus had the highest flow (23 mm), followed by BC Sealer (22.5 mm) and ZenSeal (22 mm), but there was no statistically significant difference between the sealers (p>.05). All sealers were alkaline, and the pH reduced over time. ZenSeal and BC Sealer had significantly higher pH than AH Plus (p <.0001), but there was no difference between ZenSeal and BC Sealer (p>.05) at all time periods. Based on our findings, all sealers met ISO standards, which recommends not less than 17 mm and 3 mm of Al for flow and radiopacity, respectively. Calcium silicate-based sealers were more alkaline than AH Plus, which may positively impact the clinical use of these materials.
