Surgically trained endodontists have the ability to save patient's teeth affected by external resorption, as well as save multi-rooted teeth that are periodontally compromised by means of root amputation procedures. In the real world practice environment where referrals and fellow specialists are largely unaware that many affected teeth can be saved, this session shows how and when these teeth can be retained. Like any technical procedure, performing an external resorptive repair or root amputation with predictability requires proper diagnosis, planning, execution, and followup. This session will briefly review the supporting literature that justifies the procedures, and will present the process in which cases are predictably treated. The specialty of endodontics has the core value based on the ability to save teeth, and having the competence to execute these two procedures can provide significant value to your patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the endo, perio and restorative considerations when treating teeth affected by external resorption.
  • Recognize the important treatment objectives associated with root amputation procedures, and key points when executing the treatment to satisfy those objectives.
  • Recognize the value in saving a tooth affected by resorption, or requiring a root amputation, and how the benefits of saving the tooth can outweigh the alternative.
