Despite primary endodontic treatment having reported success rates as high as 86% to 90%, failures can still occur. When dealing with failed endodontically treated teeth, three main treatment options exist: nonsurgical retreatment, endodontic surgery, or extraction. Nonsurgical retreatment is typically the least invasive and is often the initial choice for addressing these cases. However, the prognosis of nonsurgical retreatment remains a subject of debate in the literature, with a wide range of reported outcomes.

This presentation seeks to provide an updated and critical assessment of the existing research on the outcomes of nonsurgical endodontic retreatment. It also delves into whether treatment outcomes have shown improvement over the past decade and examines potential prognostic factors that may impact these outcomes. The ultimate objective is to enhance our understanding of the effectiveness of nonsurgical retreatment, enabling clinicians to make well-informed decisions when confronted with a failing endodontically treated tooth.
