(PO25) Influence of Periapical Lesions, Endodontic Treatment, and Public Health Demographics on C-Reactive Protein Levels: A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract: C-Reactive Protein (CRP), an acute-phase protein linked to inflammation, is explored in relation to periapical lesions (PL), age, and gender. This study, conducted in a dental clinic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 2021 to August 2023, involved a sample of 300 patients who met specific exclusion criteria, such as systemic comorbidities, having more than one PL, recent hospitalization, and factors influencing bone metabolism. In this study, we researched the association between CRP levels and PL, and whether its levels change in patients after root canal treatment (RCT). Additionally, we correlated other factors with elevated CRP levels in the blood, such as gender and age. Data on CRP levels were extrapolated from blood samples before and after RCTs, and demographics such as age and gender were also collected. Statistical analysis using SPSS 25, including the Shapiro-Wilk, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and multiple regression tests, was performed to analyze the data's normality distribution, reduction in CRP levels after treatment, and the association of demographics with CRP levels, respectively. Findings suggest a strong association between PL and elevated CRP levels, with a notable reduction post-RCT. Also, results imply a potential link between age and CRP levels, although not clinically significant, while gender does not significantly impact CRP levels. In conclusion, the research emphasizes the connection between PL and CRP levels, highlighting the positive effect of endodontic treatment on reducing it, and provides insights into the broader health implications of oral health conditions. It contributes to understanding the interplay between inflammation, dental public health, and systemic well-being.
