(TC52) Apical Negative Pressure Technique for Calcium Hydroxide Placement

Abstract: Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) is commonly used as an intracanal medicament during endodontic treatment. It has been shown that the optimal placement of Ca(OH)2 is crucial to its effectiveness in reducing the bacteria within the root canal. The purpose of this table clinic is to demonstrate the application of Ca(OH)2 using the apical negative pressure technique. Recent studies have shown the use of the apical negative pressure technique for sealer placement to minimize the number of voids during obturation. In this scenario, Ca(OH)2 will be placed in the coronal aspect of the canal, followed by the insertion of a NaviTip needle to the predetermined working length. The empty syringe to which the needle is attached is then slowly pulled back as the Ca(OH)2 flows down to the predetermined working length. This table clinic will include materials to demonstrate and practice the application of Ca(OH)2 using the apical negative pressure technique. Some considerations to be made would be the management of open apices and approximation to the inferior alveolar nerve or sinus in order to prevent over-extrusion. The method is designed to create almost a vacuum-like application of the Ca(OH)2. The controlled application of negative pressure allows for a more precise and targeted delivery of Ca(OH)₂ into the apical region, ensuring thorough coverage throughout the canal system.
