(PO116) Prevalence of Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin in a Military Healthcare System

Abstract: dontogenic sinusitis plagues patients with recurring maxillary sinus inflammation due to potential missed diagnosis during routine dental examinations. Insufficient literature on the subject and lack of collaboration between dental providers and otolaryngologists may contribute to patients undergoing unnecessary treatments and receiving delayed referrals to the appropriate providers. The American Association of Endodontists’ Position Statement in 2018 provided a formal stance on Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin (MSEO), which presents with a different pathophysiology and requires unique treatment compared to other dental etiologies. Current prevalence studies tend to be retrospective and radiographic in nature, with a broad range of reported data. This cross-sectional, observational study evaluated the prevalence of MSEO in a military healthcare system, encompassing active-duty service members, retirees, and civilian beneficiaries, through clinical and radiographic evaluation of patients with an established diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis. Subjects were screened, and an endodontic evaluation was conducted. Subject symptoms, as well as radiographic and relevant clinical findings, were collected, and patients were provided with an endodontic diagnosis and treatment as needed. Subjects were enrolled when a review of medical conditions revealed an established diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, odontogenic sinusitis, or any related terminology indicating inflammation of the maxillary sinus. Analysis was completed to determine if subjects’ initial diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis had the potential of endodontic etiology followed by prevalence rate determination. Study enrollment and data collection will begin soon. Preliminary findings are anticipated within the following months.
