(PO119) Comprehensive Assessment of Bacterial Composition in Primary and Secondary Endodontic Infections Through Advanced Sequencing Techniques: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The complex microbial ecosystems within endodontic infections have long been a subject of interest and concern in the field of dentistry. Recent advancements in sequencing technologies have transformed our ability to understand the composition of these infections. The objective of this systematic review is to provide an in-depth analysis of the scientific literature pertaining to bacterial compositions in different endodontic infections, including primary apical periodontitis (PAP) and secondary apical periodontitis (SAP), employing advanced sequencing techniques. The review outlined in this paper adheres to the PRISMA protocol and encompasses articles sourced from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar within the relevant scientific literature from 2000 to October 2023. The search terms were designed to capture studies related to endodontic infections, bacterial compositions, and advanced sequencing techniques. Among the 39 articles initially identified, a total of 33 articles met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. The findings extracted from these studies revealed that the most prevalent phyla, regardless of infection type, were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria. However, variations in bacterial dominance between PAP and SAP were observed. Furthermore, our findings offer a glimpse into the potential functional aspects of these microbial communities, which encompass processes such as amino acid and inorganic ion transport and metabolism, energy production and conversion, as well as cell wall biogenesis. The knowledge acquired through this systematic review holds the potential to shape the course of future research and enrich our comprehension, not just of the microbial composition, but also of their functional aspects.
