(PO50) The Efficacy of Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) Use in Endodontic Surgery: A Comprehensive Literature Review

Abstract: The study aimed to assess the efficacy of the application of platelet-rich fibrin in endodontic surgery. An electronic search of studies published in the English language in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar from June 2014 to June 2023 was conducted using the keywords: bone healing, endodontic microsurgery, periapical surgery, platelet-rich fibrin, and postoperative pain. A total of 321 articles were included in the title and abstract screening. After the application of exclusion and inclusion criteria, a total of 16 articles were included in this review. The results illustrated that the use of platelet-rich fibrin in endodontic surgeries provides a cost-effective solution with the benefits of significant reduction in early postoperative pain levels and swelling and, more importantly, promotes early bone healing after endodontic surgery. PRF is easily and quickly produced by a single centrifugation of autologous blood without the addition of thrombin or anticoagulants, providing a stable and resistant membrane rich in growth factors, from which wound healing can rapidly take place. An important property of PRF is the extended release of growth factors at the application site for at least 7 days. Released cytokines and growth factors stimulate the activity of osteoblasts. Furthermore, the release of growth factors accelerates tissue regeneration by increasing the migration of fibroblasts. Within the limitations of the current study, PRF showed promising results and was a beneficial addition to endodontic surgery treatments.
