(PO55) Evaluation of the Bioactive Properties of Endodontic Cements Biodentine and NeoMTA Plus

Abstract: Hydraulic cements based on calcium silicate are bioactive; they have the capacity to release hydroxyl and calcium ions and produce apatite-type precipitates when they come into contact with phosphate-containing physiological fluids. The release of calcium and hydroxyl ions allows MTA to promote regeneration and remineralization. The study aims to >i>in vitro compare the bioactive potential of NeoMTA Plus and Biodentine endodontic cements, focusing on their alkalizing action and superficial apatite-forming capacity. The elemental composition of the materials was analyzed before and after setting. Samples were prepared according to manufacturers' instructions and evaluated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The pH of the samples immersed in distilled water at different intervals was measured. Both materials exhibited alkalizing activity within 10 minutes of immersion, with NeoMTA Plus reaching its peak earlier but decreasing significantly after 72 hours, while Biodentine showed a gradual increase up to 168 hours. Both induced apatite formation, evident after 1 hour of immersion.Both cements demonstrated high bioactivity, with Biodentine showing early evidence of apatite formation and a greater capacity to increase local pH than NeoMTA Plus. Although the Ca/P ratio showed no significant differences after a week, it is concluded that both materials are excellent alternatives for endodontic treatments, offering clinical advantages over traditional cements. This study contributes to understanding the bioactive properties of endodontic cements, supporting their clinical application in endodontic treatments.
